   No. 7 - March/April, 2015

I hope you’re having a nice Spring! With the new season we are starting to see new projects in our university.

One of the new projects that have been born is the new rule past by the University Senate, which gives masters completely taught in a third language more credits per hour. I am hopeful that this will help develop more master degrees in English at URV (or in any other foreign language), thus having a very positive impact on the internationalization of our institution.

This is an important step in the right direction, but there are a lot more that we can take: let’s start having more subjects in English both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Yes, I know that by giving a subject in English, this does not make this subject “international” by definition, but it definitely becomes more attractive to international students and it also helps local students improve their English level. If, on top of that, we manage to involve the international students in our classrooms and profit from their presence, if we introduce international bibliography and case studies from different contexts, we will be working on our internationalization at home, thus working on better preparing our own students for the global labour market, on training tomorrow’s global citizens.

I am writing this editorial some days after my travel to Beijing, where a delegation from Catalan universities is participating in the APAIE (Asia-Pacific Association for International Education) Conference with participants from all over the world. It is impressive to see so many universities from everywhere fully committed to internationalise, to collaborate with other institutions, to becoming better and more competitive. And URV is one of them indeed.

There is so much that is being done from all corners of the university. This is an open invitation to all of you to send us news on your international projects, your international triumphs, which we will publish in this newsletter to let them known to the whole URV community. Let us congratulate ourselves on everything that we are doing right, which is already so much!

Mar Gutiérrez-Colón Plana

Vice-Rector for Internationalisation
